"Here, then, is the real problem of our negligence. We fail in our duty to study God's Word not so much because it is difficult to understand, not so much because it is dull and boring, but because it is work. Our problem is not a lack of intelligence or a lack of passion. Our problem is that we are lazy."
--R. C. Sproul
I have to admit. I falter when it comes to reading my bible daily for the reason R. C. Sproul states above. He's right it is work and sometimes I don't like having to work when it is much easier to be lazy.
Luckily for me, I have a friend who's now holding me accountable for my lack of bible reading. I mentioned him before in the previous "Men of Righteousness" post. Just about everyday he asks, "Did you read today?" I think it is a good thing to have someone in your life hold you accountable to areas that you happen to be weak in.
Depending on my answer he would say, "How did it make you feel after reading it?" Often times my answer was, "No, not today." Things tended to happen like work and trying to hang out with new people I've met. After giving my excuses Colin then says to me something along the lines of, "You have plenty of time to hang out with your friend. Just remember it's important for you to read your bible." He always seems to give me subtle conviction, which I need.
I have to admit, during the times the question came of weather or not I've read my bible, I wanted to lie and say, "Yes, I have." However, my personal convictions got the best of me and I couldn't tell the untruth. A long time ago I decided to be as honest and upfront with people as I can. I find that relationships tend to grow exponentially when honesty is at the forefront of them.
I believe it important for us men to be as honest as we possible can with others in helping in our spirit walk. So I challenge you today in being open and honest with people you know and those you meet. You never know how you will feel afterwards.
